Taken At Privacy Policy
Taken At is a camera that writes the date, the time and the place into each photograph as you take it, and keeps your photographs in one dated list. Your photographs can show your home, your car and where you were, so the app is built so that nothing you photograph ever comes to us. It is kept on your phone, with a backup copy in your own iCloud account, and it goes nowhere else unless you send it somewhere yourself.
What the app collects
Nothing. There are no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The app has no servers of its own, and we have no access to anything you photograph. Your photographs are stored on your device, in the app's own protected storage, and in the backup described below.
Your location
If you allow it, the app asks the iPhone where it is while the camera is open, and only then. The position, and the street address that Apple's maps service gives for it, are written onto the photograph and inside the photograph's file (its EXIF data, together with the model of phone and lens), and kept with it on your phone and in your own iCloud backup. They are not sent to us or to anyone else. To turn a position into an address the iPhone sends that position to Apple's maps service, under Apple's privacy policy; the app adds nothing that identifies you. You can switch the place off in the app's Settings, or refuse location in the iPhone's Settings, and the stamp is then the date and time alone.
The camera and your photographs
Photographs you take in the app are stamped and kept in the app's own storage. Nothing is written to your photo library unless you choose Save Image when sending. Photographs cannot be imported into the app. A copy of each photograph is kept in your own iCloud backup, unless you have switched that off, and no photograph is sent anywhere else or to us.
The automatic backup to your iCloud
Proof is usually wanted long after it was taken, often on a different phone. So the app keeps a backup copy of your photographs and the list of them in your own iCloud account, in storage private to this app. It is made automatically and it is free. It is a backup and not a sync: the app reads it only when you ask it to bring your photographs back, for instance on a new phone, and it is never shared with another person. It is held by Apple under your Apple Account and Apple's terms, and protected as the rest of your iCloud is. We cannot see it, we do not receive a copy, and we could not recover it for you. You can switch the backup off on the app's Backup page, and you can delete what has been saved from the iPhone's Settings, under your name, iCloud, Manage Storage. Deleting the app removes the photographs from the phone but leaves the iCloud backup until you delete it there.
Sending
When you send photographs, as they are or as a PDF made on your phone, the files are handed to the app or person you choose through the standard iOS share sheet. The stamp is part of the picture, and the same date and position are inside the file, so whoever receives it can see when and where it was taken. Where those files go afterwards is under your control, not ours.
Purchases
The unlock is a single purchase sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles the payment and the purchase record. The app asks Apple whether the unlock has been bought; it never sees your name, payment details or Apple Account. Apple's own privacy policy applies to that transaction.
Network use
The only connections the app makes are to Apple: the App Store, to read the price and confirm the purchase; your own iCloud, for the backup; and Apple's maps service, to turn a position into an address. The camera and the date and time stamp work with the phone in aeroplane mode; the place is then stamped as coordinates without the address, and the backup catches up afterwards. The app does not connect to us.
Children
The app is rated 4+ and collects no information from anyone, of any age.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
