The Complaint Diary Privacy Policy
The Complaint Diary keeps a dated record of a problem you may have to prove later: noise, damp and mould, repairs that have not been done, anti-social behaviour. It is built so that nothing you write, photograph or record ever leaves your phone unless you send it somewhere yourself.
What the app collects
Nothing. There are no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The app has no servers of its own. Your entries, photographs and sound recordings are stored only on your device, in the app's own protected storage, and are deleted when you delete the app.
The microphone
While you are recording a noise entry, the app uses the microphone for two things: to show a sound level on screen, and to make a short recording that is kept only if you tap to keep it. Anything not kept is deleted from the phone straight away. Recordings are never uploaded, analysed anywhere else, or shared with anybody, including us. The level shown is an indicative reading from a phone microphone, not a calibrated measurement, and the app says so on screen and on the printed sheet.
Photographs
Photographs you take in the app, or choose from your library, are copied into the app's own storage and kept with the entry. The app reads the date the photograph was taken from the image itself, so that the record shows when the damage was there. Nothing is written back to your photo library.
Face ID and passcode
If you turn on the lock, the app asks iOS to confirm it is you with Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode. Apple's system does the checking. The app never sees your face data or your passcode.
Printing, sending and backups
When you print or send the diary sheet, the PDF is made on your device and handed to the printer, app or person you choose through the standard iOS share sheet. The same is true of the case file, which can contain your photographs and recordings, and of the backup file, which is encrypted with a passphrase you choose and that the app does not keep and cannot recover. Where those files go afterwards is under your control, not ours.
Reminders
If you ask to be reminded to write in the diary, the reminder is a local notification scheduled on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere to make it happen.
Purchases
The optional unlock is sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles the payment and keeps the purchase record. The app asks Apple whether the unlock has been bought; it never sees your name, payment details or Apple Account. Apple's own privacy policy applies to that transaction.
Network use
The only connection the app makes is to Apple's App Store, to read the price of the unlock and to confirm purchases. The app works completely with the phone in aeroplane mode.
Children
The app is rated 4+ and collects no information from anyone, of any age.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
